Do you want to win in life? If you’re reading this then your answer to that question is probably a resounding “yes!” You’re likely a high-achiever who wants to win in multiple (or all) areas of life. This is great, but there’s a key difference between wanting to win and actually winning.
Perhaps you want to be able to travel the world, step foot on all seven continents! Or maybe for you “winning” means being able to send your kids to a good school, or build a business that gives you FREEDOM.
Winning might mean having a life that let’s you give generously to those around you. Winning might mean buying a hot red Lamborghini. Whatever winning looks like for you, it will be incredibly when it happens!
I believe everyone (yes, you too) has the ability to win in life. Sadly, not everyone will. And often the only thing holding you back is yourself.

Last week I saw a man on the city sidewalk wearing a suit. That’s not too unusual, but what was different is that he was carrying a leaf blower. Walking slowly down the sidewalk, this fully suited man was blowing the dirt off of the sidewalk.
Either this man was dressing for the job he wanted, not the job he had, OR something even more remarkable was taking place. Was this man just a sharply dressed sidewalk sweeper? No, this man was the owner of the adjacent restaurant.
Road construction was taking place near his restaurant, creating lots of unwanted dust and dirt near the restaurant entrance. This owner could have complained about the dirt, and had every right to do so. However, he knew simply complaining wouldn’t attract more customers into his restaurant. Instead, he took action.
Here’s a video of the restaurant owner blowing the sidewalk in his suit:
This business owner chose not to whine; he chose to win. Fully suited up, just an hour away from opening his doors, he went to the sidewalk with a leaf blower to clean the entrance for his guests.
How often do you encounter an obstacle in your life, and let it stop you in your tracks? It’s so easy to play the victim in a situation. You can sit there, cross your arms, pout your lips, and yell about how a situation isn’t fair.
Unfair situations, unexpected struggles, and unforeseen stumbling blocks have the power to hold you back. They also present you with an opportunity to push forward. Will you sit there and complain about the way something is, or will you contribute about the way something can be?

How To Stop Whining And Start Winning
Employees might complain about a situation that is “outside their job description”. But if you want to be an entrepreneur, or if you simply want to win in life, you must embrace an ownership mindset.
But I get it, if whining seems to come naturally to you, almost like a second language, then how can you flip the switch overnight? Well it may be a process, but here are three steps to converting your whining into winning.
1. Practice Gratitude
Being grateful for what is going right in your life is very powerful. Our minds create ruts of thinking when we focus on certain directions consistently. The best way to combat whining is to retrain your mind to find the good things in life.
One way to practice gratitude is with a gratitude journal. Each morning when you wake up spend just a few minutes thinking about what you appreciate in your life. Write down at least three things you can be grateful for right now.
When you start your day by practicing gratitude you’re also training your mind to look for positive things throughout your day. It’s hard to whine about life when you’re constantly looking for the good in it!
2. Focus On Solutions
Anyone can find problems in the world. It’s easy (just turn on the news). What a winner does is find solutions instead.
What you focus on you will get more of. Focus on solutions and you will find solutions. You’ll also gain energy and momentum as you find solutions.
Your focus creates a snowball effect. If you focus on problems then you will start to notice even more problems, and your mind will snowball into a problem-creation factory!
Therefore, focusing on solutions can have the same effect but in a positive direction! Use your focus to create a solution snowball and see how things start to work themselves out!
Remember the restaurant owner in our story above. When the road construction put dust and dirt all over his sidewalk, he could have focused on the problem of a dirty sidewalk, or the problem of unhappy customers. However, he chose to focus on the solution and pulled out a leaf blower to clean up the mess!

3. Take Ownership
True winners take ownership of an outcome. It doesn’t matter who’s to blame, or who should fix an unfair situation. Winners take ownership of a problem and make it their personal responsibility to fix it quickly.
Winners don’t talk about why something isn’t their fault. It very well may not be your fault that you’re in a certain situation. And guess what, it doesn’t matter.
If you want to win in life you won’t sit around trying to figure out who should take ownership. You will step up and take responsibility for the results you want to see in life.
Inside The Heart Of A Winner
At the heart of every great winner is someone doing whatever they can to serve their customers well.
Inside every winner is a servant leader who seeks to serve others by helping them live a better life.
Unfortunately we seem to live in a world where people like to complain about problems. However, few people actually contribute to progress. Switch your mindset from complaining to contributing and you’ll automatically rise above others.
Whining about an unfair situation will stop you from winning every time. Winners don’t whine. Winners serve by taking decisive action.
