A giant talking testicle recently approached me. The situation started off a bit nutty, but afterwards I realized that there was a sack full of marketing insight just hanging there.
Washington, D.C. is the capitol of the United States. Everyone who has an agenda to push is there trying to get people to hear their message. Even walking through public areas you will see signs from various groups wanting you to listen to them.
Some of these groups have great messages. Some of them sound a little crazy. But none of that matters. What matters is that they’re all struggling to be heard.
Your message matters, but it can only have an impact if people listen.
The National Mall is a huge piece of open field spanning the distance between the U.S. Capitol building and the Washington Monument, then continues to the Lincoln Memorial. In total it’s about a 2 mile walk.
While walking through the Mall all of a sudden this large tan object starts waving at me energetically, then rushes towards me. It’s a person dressed as a six foot tall testicle. Unexpected is a great way to describe the current situation.
The nut continues to talk to me about their cause, testicular cancer prevention, and then hands me a self-exam pamphlet with a direct call to action on it. In addition to performing self-exams, this organization wants people to donate money online to support their cause.
The nut and I take a picture together and I’m told to post it with the hashtag #BallsToTheMall. Clever.
After a brief friendly exchange and a repeat of the call to action (donate money) the nut strolls away to find it’s next man to educate.

(The cause is the Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation.) Out of the dozens and dozens of people trying to be heard in the nation’s capitol, a giant nut was able to stand out above the rest.

My interaction with a giant nut gives us 6 weird marketing tips that will help you stand out, cut through the noise, and build a business you love.
1. Be Bold
You must willing to stretch your comfort zone. Let courage lead your marketing, not fear. Keep it connected to the problem you solve, but be willing to be “that guy” who people simply can’t ignore.
2. Know Your Customer
The nut had it easy. Pretty much any man between 18 and 40 was their target customer, and they’re easy to spot on the street. Who is your target customer? What do they resonate with? Where do they already spend their time?

3. Communicate Clearly With Passion
Don’t talk over people’s heads, and don’t try to be too clever. People have limited attention and will tune you out fast if you’re not crystal clear what you’re about.
Also, passion goes a long way in getting people engaged with your message. If your message is clear, but communicated without energy or passion, then people will assume its not that important.
Passion = Pertinence
4. Create Immediate Value
This nut wasn’t just a crazy person in a costume. They immediately mentioned how their cause relates to my life, and gave me a pamphlet that educates me and is valuable right now.
What can you give your customer upfront that helps them on the spot? Creating value demonstrates your ability to solve their problem, and shows a heart of generosity and trust.
5. Give A Clear Call To Action
Clarity is key, yet again. What do you want somebody to do next? How can they become a customer with you? Clearly identify your customer’s next direct action and they will be more likely to do it.
6. Make It Fun
Fun is attractive, plain and simple. Even with a matter as serious as testicular cancer this organization found a way to make their message fun. What’s more fun than running around Washington D.C. dressed as a giant testicle?!
Find or create ways to make your message more fun and people will flock to you.
Look at what your competitors are doing to be heard. Then do something different. When everyone zigs you must figure out how to zag if you want to stand out.
